When we are sick, our bodies often feel weak and our minds are clouded with discomfort. It can be a struggle to even get out of bed, let alone focus on a book or article. As someone who loves to read, I have always found solace in books during difficult times, but when I am sick, I simply cannot bring myself to focus on the written word.
Confession: I can’t read when I’m sick. It’s a frustrating realization for someone who relies on reading as a form of escape and comfort. When my head is pounding, my throat is sore, and my body aches all over, the thought of diving into a book feels like an overwhelming task. The words on the page blur together, and my mind drifts off in a haze of illness and fatigue.
I have tried to push through and force myself to read when sick, hoping that it would distract me from my symptoms and make me feel better. However, I have come to accept that reading is not a cure-all for sickness. In fact, trying to read when I am feeling unwell often only serves to frustrate me further, as I struggle to concentrate and retain any information.
Instead of forcing myself to read when sick, I have found other ways to pass the time and help myself feel better. Watching a comforting movie or TV show, listening to soothing music, or simply resting and allowing my body to heal are all more effective ways for me to cope with illness. I have learned to give myself permission to take a break from reading when I’m sick, knowing that I will return to it when I am feeling better.
It can be hard to admit that something we love to do is not always possible, especially when we are feeling vulnerable and in need of comfort. However, it is important to listen to our bodies and take care of ourselves during times of sickness. Reading will always be there waiting for us when we are ready to pick up a book again, but for now, it’s okay to put it aside and focus on rest and recovery.
So, if you find yourself unable to read when you are sick, know that you are not alone. Take care of yourself, listen to your body, and trust that the words will still be waiting for you when you are feeling better. In the meantime, allow yourself the grace to focus on healing and self-care, knowing that reading will always be there to bring you comfort and joy when you are ready.
