Today we have the pleasure of sitting down with author Gabrielle Prendergast to chat about her latest novel, Zero Repeat Forever. The book follows the story of Raven, a teenage girl who must survive an alien invasion alongside a group of rebellious teens. Throughout the novel, Raven forms a unique bond with an alien soldier, Eighth, leading to unexpected twists and turns in their journey.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind Zero Repeat Forever?
A: The inspiration for Zero Repeat Forever came from a variety of sources. I have always been fascinated by science fiction and the idea of alien invasion, so I wanted to explore what that might look like from a YA perspective. Additionally, I was inspired by real-life events such as the Vietnam War and other conflicts where teenagers have been forced to grow up quickly and face impossible decisions. I wanted to capture that sense of urgency and survival instinct in Raven and the other characters.
Q: The relationship between Raven and Eighth is central to the story. How did you approach writing their dynamic?
A: Writing Raven and Eighth’s dynamic was one of my favorite parts of the book. I wanted to create a relationship that was complex and nuanced, with both characters challenging each other’s beliefs and preconceptions. Raven and Eighth come from different worlds, quite literally, so I wanted to explore the idea of finding common ground despite those differences. It was important to me that their relationship felt authentic and layered, with both characters growing and changing over the course of the story.
Q: What do you hope readers will take away from Zero Repeat Forever?
A: I hope that readers will take away a sense of empathy and understanding from Zero Repeat Forever. The book deals with themes of survival, trauma, and redemption, so I hope that readers will see the humanity in all of the characters, even the ones who may initially seem like villains. I also hope that readers will be inspired by Raven’s resilience and courage, and that they will consider the importance of compassion and connection in the face of adversity.
Q: Can you give us a hint about what to expect in the upcoming sequel to Zero Repeat Forever?
A: The sequel to Zero Repeat Forever, called Cold Falling White, will pick up where the first book left off and continue Raven and Eighth’s story. Without giving too much away, I can say that there will be more action, more suspense, and more twists and turns as Raven and Eighth navigate the dangerous post-invasion world. Readers can expect new characters, new challenges, and new discoveries as the stakes continue to rise.
